Full Job Description

The Learning Community School in Swannanoa, NC is looking for Camp Counselors to help ensure that local elementary and middle school age children have fun and enjoy the outdoors. Each weekday will be spent with a group of 10-12 campers playing games, building shelters, exploring creeks, and much more. Along with making sure our campers have fun, counselors will first-and-foremost ensure the safety of each child at all times. Counselors will work closely with the director to create and implement activities that build each camper as an individual and together as a group. The job duties of a Camp Counselor include planning camp games and interacting with and  educating children and teenagers. Being reliable and able to build strong relationships with children are necessities for being a successful Camp Counselor. The ideal candidate will have knowledge regarding outdoor activities, like hiking, L.N.T., and camping skills. Strong candidates will demonstrate patience, high energy, commitment, and a knack for pivoting and adapting.



$15 an hour


Available to work 4 weeks of camp sessions (Monday through Friday) + 1 day of training previous to camp start 

  •  Sessions — 6/14, 6/21, 6/28, 7/5

High school graduate or equivalent

CPR/First Aid certified before start date


  • Preferred experience: working with elementary/middle-grades age students, 1 year (preferred but not mandatory)



  • Plan outdoor activities or sports for groups of campers
  • Create weekly or daily schedules taking into account children’s age groups and interests (with help and input from director)
  • Lead recreational and educational activities (such as hiking, water exploring or crafting)
  • Escort and oversee children
  • Educate campers through games and explorations
  • Set up and maintain equipment 
  • Resolve and address behavioral issues
  • Make sure all safety rules are followed
  • Ensure site is clean and that campers don’t litter recreational areas or nature
  • Perform first aid or take care of injuries as needed
  • Keep accurate incident logs


  • Proven experience as Camp Counselor/Teacher or similar role working with children
  • Comfortable with various outdoor activities and the natural world
  • Patient and reliable
  • Organizational and communication skills
  • A love for children and their growth
  • Energetic and positive personality
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job 
  • First aid- and CPR-certified mandatory
  • High school diploma


  • 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Monday to Friday
