The Learning Community School is a small independent school for grades K-8. Our vision is to foster the inherent traits of compassion, commitment, creativity, courage and curiosity within each child.
Our mission is to create an environment where children enjoy their learning experience and where the educational needs of the whole child are addressed. We provide hands-on experiential academics in combination with outdoor education, artistic expression, and service learning.
In 2019 we moved to a new home in a beautiful historic farmhouse, nestled in the mountains between Asheville and Black Mountain among 40 acres of beautiful Western NC forest and streams. This is where our learners love spending school days roaming, playing, and learning about their natural surroundings.
Since the purchase of our own school building and land, we’ve gradually been increasing enrollment to meet the demand of the community. In the coming months we’ll be breaking ground for a dedicated Middle School building that will also house our performance art space, and plan to add a preschool option in the next few years as well. And did you know we offer transportation options? We have two dedicated school buses that run daily between Asheville and TLC.
Join us and see what makes this school community so incredible!
TLC prides itself on its ability to set rigorous academic standards without overloading students with an abundance of homework or rote learning exercises. Our graduates regularly go on to take Honors and AP courses in high school.
TLC classes are filled with hands-on, inquiry-based lessons that encourage students to make discoveries.
While students engage in units of study as a class, teachers work one-on-one with students to accomplish individual learning goals. Our classrooms enjoy a 10:1 ratio.
Multi-age classrooms build confidence, mentorship, and leadership in older students.Younger students are motivated by the older students to challenge themselves.
Music, art, and theater are an integral part of the education at TLC. Our all-school musical, visual arts instruction along with STEAM, Artful Thinking, and MakerSpace projects all offer opportunities for students to think creatively.
Our curriculum for both TEAM for grades K-5 and TRIBE for 6-8 involves weekly lessons, exercises, games, and conflict mediation skills. This provides a successful mechanism for handling conflicts that might arise at school.
Our students camp, hike, and enjoy playing and learning in the woods. Lessons in primitive skills, canoeing, homesteading, and LNT camping skills are taught to all ages. Students spend a large part of each school day outside. Our new 40-acre campus has a creek, ponds, and a trail system, providing many opportunities for outdoor learning.
Through service learning, students gain an understanding and appreciation for how their actions impact the greater community outside school.
We believe it is important for students in grades K/3 to move, play, and learn in an environment free of screen-time. Starting in grade 4, we mindfully introduce students to technology, with an emphasis on digital citizenship.
We appreciate Kiersten for helping settle the K/1 classroom into their new handwashing routine each morning; John, Dan, and Meggan for helping in the morning carline; and Daisy for her office/recycling/trash support!
